Alicia Hernández

Alicia Mares (Mexico City, 1996) grew up in the shadow of a withered peach tree, and twenty-three years later was part of the 12th class of the Master’s in Creative Writing at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona.
She has published a novel, ‘Captive of Shadows’ (Plaza y Valdés, 2020), two collections of short stories, ‘Cocodrilario’ (Horror Vacui, 2022) and ‘Tornasol’ (Ocelote, 2024), and a poetry collection, ‘Movements to Sandcastles’ (Valparaíso Ediciones, 2024). She was featured in the anthology ‘New Emergencies’ (Candaya, 2023).
She has participated in the writers’ residencies UTV (Under the Volcano) in Tepoztlán, and Bajo la Pirámide, at UDLAP in Cholula. She was a recipient of a fellowship from the System of Supports for Creation and Cultural Projects (SACPC, formerly FONCA) during 2022-2023, in the category of Short Story, and from PECDA Tlaxcala 2024-2025, also in short stories. She was a finalist in the XXXV Ana María Matute Women’s Narrative Award with the story ‘The Dying Reflections of Water.’
This year her next book of short stories, ‘Marigold Flower Ice Cream,’ will be published by La Tinta del Silencio.
