Eliseo Alberto “Lichi” (In succession)
Eliseo Alberto de Diego García Marruz, Lichi, was born in Cuba in 1951 and died in Mexico City in 2011. He was naturalized Mexican in 2000. He is the son of the Cuban poet Eliseo Diego. He obtained a BA in Journalism from University of Havana and was the editor of the literary magazine El Caimán Barbudo and a deputy editor of the film Magazine Cine Cubano, as well as a college professor. His third novel, Caracol Beach, earned him in 1998 the first ever Alfaguara International Novel Award, which he shared with Nicaraguan writer Sergio Ramírez. He also wrote for movies and TV, including writing the script for Tomás Gutierrez Alea’s 1997 feature film Guantanamera (1997). He’s won the following awards: Medalla del Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos, 1995, for Guantanamera; Premio Nacional de la Crítica, 1983, for La fogata roja; Premio Alfaguara 1998 for Caracol Beach; and Premio Gabino Palma for Informe contra mí mismo, 1997.
